Proverbs 10:27 declares, "The fear of the Lord prolongs days, but the years of the wicked are shortened." Scripture is clear: some sins do not just wound the soul — they cut the thread of our days. Let's look at six.
1. Rebellion Against Authority
Honor your father and mother, Ephesians 6:2-3 says, "that it may be well with you and that you may live long on the earth." The reverse is equally true.
2. Sexual Immorality
Proverbs 5 describes the path to "her house that inclines to death." Beyond physical consequence, it cuts spiritual fellowship with God.
3. Unforgiveness and Bitterness
Medical science now confirms what Scripture has always said — a bitter heart corrodes the body.
4. The Love of Money
1 Timothy 6:10 calls it the root of all kinds of evil, piercing the soul with many sorrows — and many of those sorrows shorten life.
5. Murder, Including with the Tongue
James warns that the tongue kindles a fire, and Matthew 5 extends the command to inward hatred.
6. Persistent Rejection of the Holy Spirit
Acts 5 and 1 Corinthians 11 both show that grieving the Spirit has real, physical consequences. When the Life-Giver is resisted, life itself is forfeited.
These warnings are not to terrify, but to turn us home. The same God who sets boundaries gives grace to walk in them.
